I love you mum – still

There is a time my mother had visitors, I was young in high school then, and I decided to help her to cook chicken. I didn’t know how to cook chicken but I had observed the process enough times, I was ready. I was going to make my mama proud and show my sister that I could cook too.

I turned the chicken into burnt offerings. Things even that dude Satan that we like blaming wouldn’t take the blame for. Thing is, I had no idea how to cut a chicken into pieces, I did not even know that I was supposed to remove that thing that makes chicken bitter if cooked. The chicken boiled okay problem started when I tasted it and it was bitter. I decided to wash it, you know, get rid of the bitterness. Makosa ilifanyika. My mum came into the kitchen and she froze when she saw me.

Unafanya nini? (What are you doing?)

Napika kuku (I’m cooking chicken)

She looked at me shaking her head

Nani alikuzaa wewe? (Who gave birth to you)

I didn’t know I was not supposed to respond but my big mouth just opened.

Si ni wewe ulinizaa mum, mimi ni mtoto wako. (You gave birth to me, I am your child)

I heard the ancestors leave the kitchen quietly, they did not want to be accomplices.

My mum told me to carry my chicken and go outside with it, she told me to eat all of it. That chicken was bitter you guys. I cried because of embarrassment, even my embarrassment was embarrassed. But I celebrate my mum, she raised us with a chalk in one hand, a bible in the other hand, and a cane in the mouth. What fond memory do you have of your mother?
