Block Adult Sites From Your Home Wi-Fi Router.

How much do you rely on your home Wi-Fi? If you’re like most people, I know I am most people, you use it for online banking, paying your credit card, reserving hotel rooms, chatting with friends, and for Netflix. More often than not, everything from laptops and phones and your TV is connected to home Wi-Fi.

This is a benefit, but when not safeguarded, your home Wi-Fi network can be a playground for scammers, hackers, and other cybercriminals. A small vulnerability in your home Wi-Fi network can give someone access to almost all the devices that connect to that network. This benefit can also be abused by authorized users visiting harmful sites.

The best method to block and filter unwanted web content is to set the Domain Name Server (DNS) Internet Protocol (IP) Address in your home router, this will filter all traffic from all devices that use the router for internet access unless the smartphone has mobile internet.

Your router functions as the choke point where all the Internet traffic for your network flows through. Setting up parental controls here will allow you to perform web filtering for all the devices on your network — computers, smartphones, tablets, game consoles, and smart TVs.

Other than that, you can also monitor what your children are consuming from the internet. You can restrict their internet access or program their devices to specific times when they can access the internet on the router web app.

Here are some examples of how this can apply:

Example 1: I want to keep my children away from Facebook from 20:00 (8 PM) on Sunday to 18:00 (6 PM) on Friday, and no other times.

Example 3: I want my children’s devices (e.g. a computer or a tablet) to have no internet access during bedtime, that is, from 22:00 (10 PM) to 7:00 the next morning from Sunday to Thursday.

One of the ways we recommend is using a secure public Doman Name Server (DNS). Cloudflare DNS 1.1.1.1 is preferred for its easy-to-use protocols and privacy-focused measures – it’s also the fastest. However, Google DNS 8.8.8.8 is preferred by many because it is backed by Google, which means it is safe and easy to use. However, it is not hidden from anyone that Google is not the best option if you care about your privacy.

The Wi-Fi router is a gate – keep it safe and sleep easy. If you need help on configuring your router for the fastest response times, unparalleled redundancy, and advanced security, chat with us. We shall be glad to schedule a service call/home visit.
